🔎 A Personal Lesson
Many years ago, I was confident my expenses were already lean, so I didn’t think I needed to review them. But when I finally let go of my ego and took a closer look, I discovered I was still paying monthly for web hosting on a website I had cancelled long ago. Deleting the site didn’t cancel the automatic payment. What an expensive lesson in assumption vs. verification!
📊 A Client Lesson
Recently, a client realized he wasn’t passing through a third-party expense cost to his own client. The service agreement allowed for it—but it had been missed on the monthly billing.
💡 The Takeaway
Lesson learned. In the words of Ronald Reagan—borrowing an old Russian proverb—“Trust, but verify.”
It’s a reminder that optimism and confidence are important, but so is double-checking the details.
Here’s how to put October into action:
1️⃣ Pricing — Confirm that your price increase notices went out in September for a November 1 effective date. If they didn’t, send them this week. Don’t wait until year-end crunch.
2️⃣ Expenses — Reduce, consolidate, or eliminate one recurring expense. Trust but verify—don’t assume your contracts, subscriptions, or pass-through costs are accurate.
